"Service learning projects are an invaluable tool as I work to teach and coach my students. I work to teach 'hands on' skills and build a sense of community along with helping them understand that each of us play a part in a strong and vital community.

I must also teach my students about work ethic and what hard work really is and that to work with one's hands is not only valuable, but is something they can take pride. The Tony Kettel Skate Gardens and the creation of the upper plateau garden area fit perfectly as a service learning project that allows me to direct students in all of the above areas I discussed."
